Marketing, per se, is neither good nor bad. It is simply the way a company speaks to us. People use their mouths, companies use marketing. It is objective. However, how companies choose to speak to us is another story. And in that case, how they market to us is mostly bad.
Good marketing offers us a view of the world.
Bad marketing offers us a product to buy.
Bad marketing speaks at us.
Good marketing starts with a cause.
Bad marketing starts with a goal.
Good marketing drives loyalty.
Bad marketing drives transactions.
Good marketing promotes values.
Bad marketing values promotions.
Good marketing tells us exactly what a company really thinks.
Bad marketing tells us what the company wants us to think they think.
Good marketing seduces.
Bad marketing targets.
Good marketing never mentions price.
Bad marketing always mentions price.
Good marketing uses the products to help tell a story.
Bad marketing tells stories about products.
Good marketing is about us.
Bad marketing is about them.
Bad marketing manipulates.
Good marketing inspires.

A man can fail many times, but he isn't a failure until he begins to blame somebody else.

If we ask "What salary are you looking for?" say you're flexible, or say it depends on the responsibilities of the job. Try not to name a salary unless we really push you, because that gives us a leg up in the negotiating.

Thank you. You're book & Ted talk has been a huge inspiration to me and my organization. I would like to help more restaurants find their why. Would you be up for a 5 minute online interview? (via skype).

i believe it is not about what they sell anymore it is about what we buy. and in this respect i think it is the end of b2c as we know it and the start of c2b! companies share their WHY we can relate to answering to our needs of buying. the rest is searching for their Why and don't even know how to listen to us..yet.

You must always keep in mind the needs of your target market, not only with your goals. Like what we do in our Heating and Cooling company.

You can only determine if it's a bad marketing that your company has been doing if its not honestly working nor helping your company grow.

I believe so strongly, in fact, that I’m taking it upon myself to call out others who may not subscribe to this particular world view.

If you want to market smart, you have to know how to avoid the scams, and how to spot the people who are ignorantly telling you to do things that will waste your time. Point by point, you can look up all the negative strategies here, and find out just why they will hurt, or what it is that makes them risky.

With those number of points you have in your posts, I can easily differentiate the type of marketing businesses are doing now. And I can now really point out who are those doing this "Bad Marketing". But I'm not gonna naming them out...it's a long list of names. :)

Good day! this is one of the most interested statement I have heard anyone said. I have always say to myself there are no rules telling us what to do, but rules telling us what not to do. We need to start making rules telling us what to do and we will see how creative our world would be. thanks,

Great idea...you have some of my favorite people contributing to your blog. I enjoy it a great deal. I'm still working out how to do links neatly but in the meantime will keep it as a post...up now.

Great post! It saws strong argument to refer to the open innovation movement in government. This explanation would require far fewer friends outside this arena and is generally well accepted
